Do you sometimes get too wrapped up in accomplishing a task that it becomes frustrating? This happens to me sometimes but the quote above – especially the part where it says “Asanas are not the goal,” helps me put things into perspective.
A New Type of Post
Welcome to my first ever “Quotes That Inspire” post. Here I will feature sayings that inspire my practice of yoga, meditation and tantra. I hope you find them inspiring as well.
David Swenson’s Wise Words
This is a quote by David Swenson, author of Ashtanga Yoga The Practice Manual.
On his book, David Swenson emphasizes that each yoga session is a very personal journey. Our only aim, he says, should be to move with awareness and to enjoy the experience.
This makes me realize how I’ve been focusing too much on technicalities. On getting the postures right, looking up images, videos and manuals online. Wanting to be stronger, to look correct if I take a picture or just wanting to prove to myself that I can do it.
Asanas Are Not the Goal
The postures or asanas, are not the goal. Just like the perfect Instagram post is not the goal. Not even the strong and flexible body. Those are good things but they are just the bonus parts. The real reward is the experience itself, which is unique to every person. At its best, it’s an experience of self awareness and exploration.
This quote inspires me to take a closer look at my practice and check my intentions. What is my aim? Is my aim to grow and relish the experience or am I being driven by ego or vanity? Am I being kind or harsh to myself? Am I practicing acceptance or passing judgment?
The Ego and the True Self
Sometimes the mind plays tricks. As always, the ego wants to take over. It casts doubts and insecurities. It takes vigilance to recognize the ego. David Swenson’s words of wisdom fiercely puts it in check.
Are you aware of your own ego? I know how mine sounds like. She’s insecure and confused. She likes to worry, compare and control. I know how the larger, non-ego part of me sounds like – she just wants to have fun. Her theme song is Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds. She’s carefree yet focused when needed. It’s always comforting with her.
When David Swenson says we must breathe deeply and remain detached, I believe he means to sever the attachment to the ego, to let go and be free of shallow desires. To be content with just being. It’s the same as renunciation.
This is what the practice of mind and body awareness could do for us. It allows us to step back and be the observer of our own thoughts and actions. It enables us to make a distinction between the ego and the true self. We learn to contemplate. Of course yoga isn’t the only way. Meditation, running, cooking – anything you enjoy can be your vehicle to get there. As long as you do it mindfully.
Thank you David Swenson!
