ARM BALANCES
Peacock | Mayurasana
Peacock strengthens the wrists, forearms, and elbows. This is a great core strengthening pose. It also cultivates balance and concentration.
Sanskrit: Mayurasana
Drishti: tip of nose
Counterpose: child's pose
Materials
- Yoga mat
- Yoga blocks (optional)
Instructions
- Start on your hands and knees with your fingers facing back toward the knees.
- Bend your elbows and lean forward so that you're resting your abs on your elbows and your chest on the upper arms.
- Straighten your legs and bring your weight forward to balance on your arms and hands. Keep the core and leg muscles engaged. Spread your toes to help flex and lift the legs.
- Hold for a few breaths and slowly release.
Notes
Modification: For a gentle variation, keep knees and feet touching the floor. You can also place a block under your chin for support. For a more difficult variation, come into lotus position while keeping the legs lifted.
Preparatory poses: chaturanga, reverse plank, crow
Follow-up poses: downward facing dog, child's pose
